Leadership Training 2

Leadership Training 2:

This week I was in contact with our House Leaders again to organise Leadership Meets. I was really interested to see if the leaders had taking on the self-discipline challenges we had set together.

Leadership Self-Challenges

L, I and K came into our Monday Leadership Meet.  L and I's challenge was listening to their own self talk and encouraging themselves.  Both said that they had become more aware of their self talk and could give examples of times they encouraged themselves. Next, they are both going to try noticing how people in their family are feeling and encouraging others. KT said he had achieved his challenge of making his bed every day. He was going to continue to work on the 'no talking back, only saying ok,' challenge over the coming week.

In our Tuesday Leadership Meet, involving K, J, J, I and A, everyone had taken on the challenge of making their bed every morning and not talking back to adults, instead saying ok when asked to do something. They reported back on their progress and I was able to recognise the self-discipline they were showing for Level 1 Leadership - leading yourself without other people telling your what to do.

This group set their next leadership challenge as: "Do chores and go to bed before being told."

Discussing Leaders' Strengths

Our leadership topic for this week was, "Use your Strengths." I asked each leader to describe their strengths - what they find easy that other people find hard. Five out of nine leaders were able to describe something they considered a 'strength.' I was able to affirm these strengths and we discussed how they could use this strength as a leader. For example, K identified one of his strengths as gaining the attention of a group when other people can not. We talked about the way that he is good at including people and that people want to be involved in what K is doing. Four students couldn't describe a personal strength, so I was able to describe a strength that I saw in them and ask if that felt right with them.

I sensed that was a great feeling (for myself and the leaders) to have their strengths recognised and affirmed. I hope they can start to see how their strengths contribute to help others.

Conclusion

I'm really enjoying the connections I'm making with leaders and families. I've found myself becoming more comfortable with the content that I'm presenting, as I've had to explain it further.

  1. This is so good SImon. It is interesting to hear that they struggled to identify their strengths. Which tells me, there is some space for us to feed into. We should affirm their strengths more verbally at school linking into that PB4L strategies. This will not only build their leadership but their confidence and self belief. Thank you for doing this, I'm finding this really interesting and can't wait to hear more.
